A GOAL & Dream we’ve got wrong!
There\’s a Goal … A DREAM we all have that’s completely wrong. Retirement
We don’t want to do nothing, do we? We just want to do something we love. It really has always been our primary motivation.
But here we find ourselves… after working a job or career, most of our lives …. told we need to leave and creep off into the retirement sunset.
Maybe it\’s good the first couple of years after we’ve slept and eaten our way back to feeling human again after hopping off the trail of exhaustion to get here.
But what we soon find we want is a challenge. Challenges let us contribute a sense of giving, or learning, and improving to ourselves and the world. We feel alive. We experience life from its inside workings and not from its distance view. Working on & overcoming challenges make us feel like we can do anything.
Three (3) years ago: Fortune Magazine published a report saying …the two most dangerous years of our lives are the year we were born & the year we retire.
An Indonesian author Toba Bets says, “You get old fast when you think about retirement.”
Because we give our Ikigai: meaning/purpose the Japanese word used in one of the \”Blue Zones\” were life can exceed 90 years old.
Or we do it to ourselves, with planning and pushing to exhaustion to get there. The promised land. Those glorious days of retirement. ( I believe this may have been the cause of my Stepfather\’s early leave from the planet.)
\”Together with the subtle loss of our social contact, the structure of our day, stimulation, and our story, what we find is a barren tundra in retirement… it’s cold, wet; guilt drench thought that this is what we wanted, this is what we worked our whole lives towards, this is the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. But the truth is there is no pot of gold. It’s just a pot of OLD!\” Say\’s Neil Pasricha in his Book The Happiness Equation.
The world has far more problems, opportunities and challenges then it has people like you and me to do the exciting and meaningful work of making a difference.
